Coal, Metals and Mining at IHS Markit has an opening in its research team for a Metals & Mining Director. The focus of the role will be those base metals (and other materials) that play a key role in the energy transition owing to their use as battery and renewables raw materials (eg. lithium, nickel, cobalt, vanadium, aluminum, copper, manganese, graphite, etc). We are looking for a candidate with strong experience covering or working in these markets. Knowledge of base metal usage in the steelmaking process would be an advantage.
This is a senior position within the global research team, reporting to the global head of research. The successful candidate will work within the global Coal, Metals & Mining research team, and will also work alongside our industry leading journalists and price reporters.
Maintain monthly deliverables covering select metals markets.
Monthly supply and demand balance sheets with associated commentary on metals markets.
Periodic research pieces on topical industry issues (eg. regulatory/policy developments, geopolitical issues, investment, project pipeline, ESG etc).
Maintain strong client and industry relationships – ideally bringing these relationships from prior roles. Continually share and source market intelligence.
Leading and participation in bespoke consulting engagements.
Engage actively in business development, assisting IHS Markit account managers in the sales process through maintaining sales pipelines and assisting in the sales process.
Be a public face of IHS Markit in the base metals space, via client/stakeholder engagements, industry presentations, media interviews, content marketing.
At least 5 years of experience in base metals industry and/or markets.
Excellent inter-personal skills, demonstrable impact and influence skills.
Strong quantitative skills (strong MS Excel is obligatory, knowledge of Python, SQL, PowerBI advantageous)
Exemplary written communication skills.
Solid organizational skills with attention to detail.
Ability to work within a team while likely operating alone (the research team is spread across the globe)
Knowledge of thermal and metallurgical coal, iron ore and ferrous scrap markets an advantage
Bachelor degree (in in a quantitative discipline preferred)
Some travel is required, likely around 4-5 trips per year.
