Consulting Associate Director

The Associate Director's responsibility is to deliver consulting services to a broad range of clients, including oil companies, midstream players and financial services firms in the Americas.  While the colleague is expected to support the delivery of various consulting projects within oil markets, midstream and downstream (OMD) sectors in the entire region, the position will have a particular focus in refining, applying his/her expertise in the use of refinery LP models as appropriate.  It is expected that he/she would provide leadership and input into the OMD consulting as well as research teams and in the development and maintenance of IHS Markit’s generic refinery PIMS model.

Successful colleagues will be able to sell, manage and deliver consulting projects using his/her refining knowledge and experience and by leveraging IHS Markit’s research and consulting knowledge base.  Expertise and experience in one or more of the downstream segments besides refining, e.g. trading, crude and oil product distribution and petrochemicals, are strongly preferred for this role to deliver strategic advice to clients. Broad knowledge of the market dynamics and competitive landscape in the downstream sector globally and in Americas is also preferred.  Projects typically require market and technical assessments, asset evaluation, competitive analysis, etc. that support clients' business and investment decisions.  Marketing IHS Markit’s expertise and himself/herself as a strategic advisor to clients with professionalism is essential.  The colleague should also endeavor to build and nourish relationships with key industry contacts that utilize or could benefit from IHS Markit’s services.  The colleague must be able to lead small consulting teams, work autonomously, serve as a subject matter expert in refining economics and LP modeling, and be able to build working relationships with clients and colleagues within the IHS Markit organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Contribute to the financial performance of the OMD Consulting business through the execution and delivery of consulting projects

  • Deliver and/or lead consulting engagements featuring crude oil valuation and market analysis, refined product market analysis, and refinery technical and commercial engagements, including valuation and M&A due diligence
  • Provide market outlooks, project evaluation and recommendations related to the design, operation, maintenance, modification, enhancement and construction of refinery processes
  • Support commercial and technology assessments. Understand, use, improve and develop competitive assessment and economic modeling tools. Actively pursue and develop unique analytical approaches that provide value to IHS Markit’s clients and/or prospects. Execute or support execution of projects using these tools and other unique analytical approaches
  • Manage consulting projects.  Manage client expectations, scope, analysis and report generation required to satisfy consulting projects.  Lead project teams, at times in multiple office locations, to complete analysis and reports.  Deliver reports and presentations to client that meet quality and timeline expectations
  • Maintain a detailed working knowledge of the OMD databases and tools to be able to manipulate models or extract information from models to satisfy client requests
  • Lead and/or participate in improvement efforts in internal databases, models, methodologies and analytical approaches, seeking on-going quality and efficiency enhancement in work products and value to IHS Markit’s clients and potential clients
  • Develop, negotiate and sell bespoke consulting proposals.  This requires clear written and verbal communication skills and analytical creativity to determine approaches and deliverables that best serve client needs and budget and maximize the opportunity and return for IHS Markit
  • Support various groups from around IHS Markit (e.g. both consulting and research teams in Chemical; Upstream; Power, Gas, Coal, and Renewables) by contributing to the technical and market analysis of crude oil and refined products and related facilities applying refining expertise
  • Maintain and provide input to the IHS Markit’s Energy Insight research teams responsible for IHS Markit’s market outlooks
  • Network and maintain contact with IHS Markit colleagues to be able to pool expertise as needed to sell and deliver projects.  Participate in coordination calls and activities
  • Mentor and guide junior consultants in a collegial team environment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ten (10) or more years of relevant downstream industry consulting experience, specifically with refinery processes and preferably with the use, development and maintenance of AspenTech PIMS models
  • Deep understanding of past, present and future of the crude oil and refined products markets with the capability to translate these insights to actionable solutions on the behalf of our clients
  • Ability to leverage own refinery LP knowledge to advance IHS Markit’s current PIMS modeling efforts and related commercial activities
  • A good understanding of how natural resources, political and regulatory environment, and labor influence regional and global petroleum and energy markets
  • Self-motivated and able to effectively manage time and multiple projects, at times from remote locations.  Highly organized and creative with accomplished time and project management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering – mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical or petroleum preferred; graduate degree a plus
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • English required; additional languages are a plus
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to cooperatively work across the organization at multiple levels to efficiently and effectively utilize the resources and knowledge base available in a team approach
  • Ability to travel (~20%)
